TOWER LINGO

Published on 5 May 2025 at 18:04

Ever wonder what tower hands mean when they shout things like “tie off!” or talk about the “top hat”? Here’s your crash course in tower crew slang, straight from the steel:

Rigging terms

TAGLINE

A rope attached to a load during a lift, used to guide it as it moves up. Miss a tag line grab? Expect chaos and a yelling match.

DEADMANS ANCHOR

A buried or fixed point that holds guy wires under tension. You don’t want your deadman to fail—ever.

RF HOT

Used to describe a live radio frequency zone—dangerous to both skin and gear. Don’t enter unless cleared and protected

Climber slang & shout outs

Bang Bang

Short for “I’m coming down.” You’ll hear this shouted loud and clear from high up the tower.

 Whoop

Means “I’m going up!” A quick call to let the crew know you’re ascending.

Bang Bang, Coming to the Dirt

Translation: “I’m coming all the way down to the ground.” Make room and stay clear.

Give Me Annie’s

Means “Give me just a little more slack.” Used for rope, rigging, or anything that’s just a touch too tight.

Whether it’s shouting “whoop” on your way up, calling for “Annie’s” on the rope, or declaring “bang bang coming into the dirt,” this lingo keeps jobs moving and crews connected.
